"Voilá",
says a French, as if he noticed what was about to come, and
"Olé", shouts happily a Franco-Spaniard in
Paris, always claiming that the “Rioja”
and the “Torres” have always
confirmed the quality of Iberian wines.
In the air we can perceive the threat, which is no longer
a warning but seems better to be the anticipated preach to
the French, who could not change, adapt and
cope with competence in the wine market.
According to the Research Center for the Study and
Observation of Life Conditions in France (CREDOC),
before 2015 Spain will be the leader of wine production.
According to CREDOC, the reasons seem to
point towards the changes in the French consumption plus a
considerable drop in reds, while at the same time, the Spaniards
keep a good level in that area.
Likewise, France would experience a drop in its production
from the 52.8 millions hectoliters produced during the period
2000-2004 to 43.9 millions by 2015, year by which it is also
expected that Spain will reach a production level of approximately
50 million hectoliters.
All seems to show that due to a problem of high French prices
the wines from Argentina, Chile, US, Australia, South
Africa, Spain and Italy are opening their way into
the international market.
“There’s plenty of room for all of them, and
at least the majority of our most prestigious houses are in
good health,” affirmed Gérard Thourde,
an expert from one of the French viticultural associations,
in reference to the Bordeaux, Borgogna, Cóte
de Rhone and Saint Emilion.
