The EU has earmarked EUR 18 million for vine conversion in
Bulgaria in 2008, Rositsa Goranova, executive director of
the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine (EAVW) says, as cited
by BNA. The specified amounts should be appropriated up until
15 October, as over 2, 400 hectares of vineyards should be
restructured.
Back in 2007 Bulgaria produced 1, 796 million hectoliters
of wine, including homemade quantities. The country’s
wine export last year ran up to 1, 125 million hectoliters
with bottled wines dominating the market (81%).
Bulgaria has been exporting wine mainly to Russia (65%), Poland,
the UK, Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Lithuania.
There are 203 legally operating wineries in Bulgaria.
Wine import has seen a 22% growth on yearly basis, reaching
up to 150, 000 hectoliters (against 123, 000 hectoliters in
2006), with Macedonia, Spain, Russia, Chile, Romania, France
and Italy being the major importers.
